Hi all,
Just thought I would share in my experience.
As a newb to linux it took me longer than I expected to get Bacula working on Centos 5, I found no clear, complete and easy documentation on how to install it the manual way or even the yum way. :-)
So I decide to put this down incase someone else is struggling. Please excuse all mistakes that might pop up I usually don't post on forums like this. This is by no means a complete HOWto, if you find mistakes please post away and i 'might' try and update this post if that is possible on this forum.
Turns out to be one of the easiest installs I've ever done, I just maybe got a little side tracked with the official bacula documentation (Perl configs and the like).
The route I took was the following.
INSTALL
1) Install CentOS (with mysql will save you a bit of bandwidth down the line) I kind of like my install to be minimal, so took me a bit longer than i expected. Optionally use Securing linux to secure, one of many good sites to secure linux that i know of.
2) Connect to the EPEL repository, read this link if you want more info EPEL how to use
3) The above step 2 should invite you to do the following 'su -c 'rpm -Uvh http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release-5-2.noarch.rpm''
4) Then I mounted the Centos 5 DVD and installed the following extra packages (using: rpm -ivh packagename, packagename etc etc). mysql, mysql-devel, mysql-server, gcc-c++, perl-DBI, openssl-devel, perl-DBD-Mysql, glibc-devel, libgomp. libstdc++-devel, krb5-devel, zlib-devel, glibc-headers, e2fsprogs-devel. If all of these packages are infact required I am not sure. Its possible some of them are used only to build bacula from scratch, but I found that particular route very badly documented so I have use yum and rpm's. I found that mysql client conflicted with server, which is understandable so I left it out. If any of the above rpm's are already installed, you will be told, just remove them from the 'rpm -ivh statement' and all should go well. If any other dependents pop up that i have not mentioned i would add them to the rpm statement if they are on the DVD, if not then try and 'yum install packagename' them. if that doesn't work then wow, u have found something i didn't expect, i this case i would google them. you might find its available at some rpm site for centos/redhat5.
5) gets nice and easy from here, 'yum install php php-gettext php-pear'
6) 'yum install qt4 qt4-devel qwt qwt-devel'
7) 'yum install wxGTK'
8) 'service mysqld start' - required to get the next part working, if you don't remember to do this and jump to step 10 you will find that bacula cannot connect to the mysql database and hence not create the correct permission and password structure and probably table structure required for bacula to work. :lol: yes this did happen to me. To fix this uninstall step 10's rpm's and give it a second try after starting the mysql service.
9) Next I downloaded the bacula EL5 rpm's from sourceforge el5 rpm's only the rpm's with EL5 in the file name. In this case I downloaded version *2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm, i think 2.2.8 is out and avaliable. I think you can find them by clicking 'download bacula', then going to 'rpms-contrib-fschwarz' if your using firefox use the find feature and type in 'el5' and click 'highlight all'.
10) Once downloaded 'rpm -ivh bacula-bat-2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm bacula-gconsole-2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm bacula-mtx-2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm bacula-mysql-2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm bacula-wxconsole-2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm'. As you can see in this case I only installed bacula-bat, bacula-gconsole, bacula-mtxm, bacula-mysql, bacula-wxconsole. For some reason i think the bacula-client conflicted with one of the above and the sqlite and postgresql rpm's are obviously not required as we chose mysql as our Database. I assume the bacula-client is just the file daemon require for other linux computers on the network you would like to backup.
CONFIG
Ok here is where you get to config bacula and check how it works. I chose to install Webmin webmin site. Easiest RPM you will ever install I think. :-D rpm -ivh webmin*wateva etc. nice little explanation on there page how to install the rpm. 1 line long i think :) just how i like it.
Webmin gives you a nice interface to start and stop the daemons, setup / attach clients, fileset, included folders and files, excluded files, add volumes, label volumes, RESTORE with gui, etc. Nothing of a super GUI but pretty decent for the basic stuff and a bit more, not to mention pretty much all other linux admin on a web interface. I found a bug with the webmin interface for adding filesets but then again its easy enough to edit the bacula-dir.conf file in /etc/bacula and i'm sure you will get the idea eventually. Webmin requires you to change from the default db setting of postgresql to mysql this can be done by clicking on the 'Module Config' on the bacula main page in webmin. Don't forget to secure webmin, by default the firewall shouldn't let you reach port 10000 from outside the box but i am no security expert so i leave that up to u. You will also need to change the bacula database password here eventually if u go ahead and change it later.
The other route is to forget webmin just start bacula by running 'service bacula-dir start', 'service bacula-fd start', and 'service bacula-sd start'. Personally I found that when editing the bacula config files in /etc/bacula it was wise to stop all the services. Especially when changing bacula's passwords. I had nightmare problems with changing passwords and daemon names before i learn't to stop the services.
I would consider reading some of the good security sites on bacula (google them).
I would advise you to change the root password of your mysql database if you have not already, change the bacula password of your mysql database, update this in the bacula-dir.conf file in two places,
(RunBeforeJob = '/etc/.......... bacula bacula PASSWORD') and (dbname = bacula; user = bacula; password = 'PASSWORD') Make the passwords STRONG, make the daemon passwords even STRONGER and Longer. The passwords they have used should give you a idea of length.
I read that only the file daemon on linux requires root access, so the storage and director can be changed to another user. I have not made time to investigate this yet.
I also changed all the passwords in all the *.conf files in /etc/bacula. I kept the client passwords to the director different from the daemon passwords on the linux server. I also changed the director, storage and file daemon names from el5_guild_bla_bla to our comapny-name-dir, company-name-mon, company-name-sd, etc. I did all of this while bacula's 3 services were stopped, if i didn't stop them they would complain about some authentication errors on next restart. My only way to fix this was move my copied/backed up original bacula *.conf files over the old ones and start again. I found alot of web pages about bacula authentication errors, but none of them seemed to have a concrete answer as to why it happens. So as i said stop the services to be safe.
Playing with the config files in vi or vim to me is the fastest way to add clients, fileset and jobs. This becomes easier once you get past the learning curve, which i found easy to do with a little reading and installing webmin to see the bigger picture of bacula. If you have never tried webmin i would strongly advise you to look into it. Then again most 'real' linux users prefer to use little to NO gui's. VIM is all the gui you will ever need i get told :-) I found it easy to use webmin to get one client up and running then u examine the conf files with vi to see what is happening and well from there its VI all the way. bit of a cheat but i had to much to do this week and little time to hack around.
webmin seems to take care of a couple of problems what crop up after install. I can't remember all of them but i remember changing most lines in the config file that started with 'address =' to 'address = hostname (name of server)' in order to get things running.
I had to open ports, 9101, 9102, and 9103 on the firewall for clients i think.
I had to install the 'winbacula-2.2.7.exe' client on all the windows boxes on the network. So far i am pretty impressed with how easy it was to get working, my only concern so far is the possible security issues that could arise from this. I will think on this some more before i call this a final setup. But suffice to say i made all the passwords strong and differnet, and the install became easy after client number 3 or 4, just make sure u choose custom if you are planing on changing the director name, and password.
I also installed samba on the server in order to add clients with there hostname and not use there static ip addresses. Samba again is very easy to config and webmin comes with a nice little interface for those who need it. not to mention for a simple workgroup i think it will improve the network performance and stability. If you want to change the settings on your windows box after you have installed bacula windows client, all you need to do is go to start, programs, then bacula something or other, should have links to the config files. if not search with windows for bacula, *.conf or something or other. don't forget to restart the bacula service on windows once you are done with changes, or just restart windows :(
I am not a linux user, i am just a average windows web / software developer that is motivated to get this working, so please don't expect me to no all the answers if you ask questions. I am sure there are many linux experts out there who can help, but if u happen to have a problem i know the answer to, i will add it.

Bit of background:
We have a small windows / linux based network that we want to backup. We wanted to backup data, not full computers like some people online seem to like (I think that is crazy btw, so much wasted junk backed up. With windows all one needs to back up are folders like
c:Documents and Settingsusernamemy docs, favourties, desktop, pst mail files if present (I prefer to put them somewhere else on creation), opera/firefox bookmarks, and other relevent company data folders. With the exclusion of *.mp3 files, my music folders and my picture folders. If the client looses things not put in the mydocs folder, unlucky. Same goes for windows registry and all that sort of junk. I've almost never heard of a case where the system state of a windows machine needs to be recovered. I am sure such a case exists but not for the average windows computer. reinstall it or image it and roll it on out. then toss all the data back as part of the recovery process, not to mention that most company data should be stored centrally IMHO and the waste space of backing up 30+ windows workstations with 80 -160 gig drives of junk. END ramble. :)
Anyway we wanted to back up the above folders, and tried AMANDA, saddly i could not get amanda and samba to work with multiple excluded directories and subfolders and files. nore could i get amanda to work friendly like with windows folders with spaces. I actually really liked amanda, probably because getting it up and running was fast, even for a simple first time backup and restore.
Oh well, i tried Bacula and BackupPC and so far i am very happy with bacula.
So thats is my story.
Hope this post helps someone.
Good luck and enjoy
Rory :-)Hey guys,
I'm a total beginner when it comes to Linux and Bacula.
I've almost got it up and running, I have the bacula-dir.conf,etc set up I can do things through webmin, Tray works. So i'm getting there. The problem i'm running into is that I can't get my Windows machine to connect with the director. I start a job manually through webmin and it sits for a few minutes then errors out and says 'No response from client'(along those lines).
Here's my director config file.

I also had my name as 'bacula2-fd' in that file but that didn't work either. And on the site I read on how to install Windows Bacula it said that the whole monitor section needed to be commented out, that's why that is the way it is.
Another problem--which may not be for here is about the Windows piece-- When ever I try to start bconsole a Command prompt window opens and immediately closes a split second later. I can't even read what's on the screen. This is a CentOS forum so that may be for another place but just in case here's my bconsole.conf file from my windows machine.
#

#
Director {
Name = bacula-dir
DIRport = 9101
address = 192.168.1.195
Password = pw
}
My password is not I replaced the actual password with that, I am 100% sure they all match but my question is--the quotes. Do those matter when entering the password? From all the documentation I can't tell if its put there because password is just an example, I also see documentation without quotes. In my config files I had mixed, some with quotes, some without (note-the quotes you see above are accurate as well as lack of quotes) and I got a password error. I then changed everything on the server side to no quotes and that went away. I just want to confirm if they matter or not, should the all have quotes? Should they all not have quotes? Does it not matter as long as it's consistent?
Sorry if these are dumb question, any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
Thanks :-D ,

Hi all,
Just thought I would share in my experience.
As a newb to linux it took me longer than I expected to get Bacula working on Centos 5, I found no clear, complete and easy documentation on how to install it the manual way or even the yum way. :-)
So I decide to put this down incase someone else is struggling. Please excuse all mistakes that might pop up I usually don\'t post on forums like this. This is by no means a complete HOWto, if you find mistakes please post away and i \'might\' try and update this post if that is possible on this forum.
Turns out to be one of the easiest installs I\'ve ever done, I just maybe got a little side tracked with the official bacula documentation (Perl configs and the like).
3) The above step 2 should invite you to do the following \'su -c \'rpm -Uvh http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release-5-2.noarch.rpm\'\'
Its possible some of them are used only to build bacula from scratch, but I found that particular route very badly documented so I have use yum and rpm\'s. I found that mysql client conflicted with server, which is understandable so I left it out. If any of the above rpm\'s are already installed, you will be told, just remove them from the \'rpm -ivh statement\' and all should go well. If any other dependents pop up that i have not mentioned i would add them to the rpm statement if they are on the DVD, if not then try and \'yum install packagename\' them. if that doesn\'t work then wow, u have found something i didn\'t expect, i this case i would google them. you might find its available at some rpm site for centos/redhat5.
5) gets nice and easy from here, \'yum install php php-gettext php-pear\'
6) \'yum install qt4 qt4-devel qwt qwt-devel\'
7) \'yum install wxGTK\'
8) \'service mysqld start\' - required to get the next part working, if you don\'t remember to do this and jump to step 10 you will find that bacula cannot connect to the mysql database and hence not create the correct permission and password structure and probably table structure required for bacula to work. :lol: yes this did happen to me. To fix this uninstall step 10\'s rpm\'s and give it a second try after starting the mysql service.
9) Next I downloaded the bacula EL5 rpm\'s from sourceforge el5 rpm\'s only the rpm\'s with EL5 in the file name. In this case I downloaded version *2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm, i think 2.2.8 is out and avaliable. I think you can find them by clicking \'download bacula\', then going to \'rpms-contrib-fschwarz\' if your using firefox use the find feature and type in \'el5\' and click \'highlight all\'.
10) Once downloaded \'rpm -ivh bacula-bat-2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm bacula-gconsole-2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm bacula-mtx-2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm bacula-mysql-2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm bacula-wxconsole-2.2.7-1.el5.i386.rpm\'. As you can see in this case I only installed bacula-bat, bacula-gconsole, bacula-mtxm, bacula-mysql, bacula-wxconsole. For some reason i think the bacula-client conflicted with one of the above and the sqlite and postgresql rpm\'s are obviously not required as we chose mysql as our Database.
I found a bug with the webmin interface for adding filesets but then again its easy enough to edit the bacula-dir.conf file in /etc/bacula and i\'m sure you will get the idea eventually. Webmin requires you to change from the default db setting of postgresql to mysql this can be done by clicking on the \'Module Config\' on the bacula main page in webmin. Don\'t forget to secure webmin, by default the firewall shouldn\'t let you reach port 10000 from outside the box but i am no security expert so i leave that up to u. You will also need to change the bacula database password here eventually if u go ahead and change it later.
The other route is to forget webmin just start bacula by running \'service bacula-dir start\', \'service bacula-fd start\', and \'service bacula-sd start\'. Personally I found that when editing the bacula config files in /etc/bacula it was wise to stop all the services. Especially when changing bacula\'s passwords. I had nightmare problems with changing passwords and daemon names before i learn\'t to stop the services.
I would consider reading some of the good security sites on bacula (google them).
I would advise you to change the root password of your mysql database if you have not already, change the bacula password of your mysql database, update this in the bacula-dir.conf file in two places,
(RunBeforeJob = \'/etc/.......... bacula bacula PASSWORD\') and (dbname = bacula; user = bacula; password = \'PASSWORD\') Make the passwords STRONG, make the daemon passwords even STRONGER and Longer.
I did all of this while bacula\'s 3 services were stopped, if i didn\'t stop them they would complain about some authentication errors on next restart.
Then again most \'real\' linux users prefer to use little to NO gui\'s.
I can\'t remember all of them but i remember changing most lines in the config file that started with \'address =\' to \'address = hostname (name of server)\' in order to get things running.
I had to open ports, 9101, 9102, and 9103 on the firewall for clients i think.
I had to install the \'winbacula-2.2.7.exe\' client on all the windows boxes on the network.
If you want to change the settings on your windows box after you have installed bacula windows client, all you need to do is go to start, programs, then bacula something or other, should have links to the config files. if not search with windows for bacula, *.conf or something or other. don\'t forget to restart the bacula service on windows once you are done with changes, or just restart windows :(
I am not a linux user, i am just a average windows web / software developer that is motivated to get this working, so please don\'t expect me to no all the answers if you ask questions.

I\'ve almost never heard of a case where the system state of a windows machine needs to be recovered.
Rory :-)Hey guys,
I\'m a total beginner when it comes to Linux and Bacula.
I\'ve almost got it up and running, I have the bacula-dir.conf,etc set up I can do things through webmin, Tray works. So i\'m getting there. The problem i\'m running into is that I can\'t get my Windows machine to connect with the director. I start a job manually through webmin and it sits for a few minutes then errors out and says \'No response from client\'(along those lines).
Here\'s my director config file.

I also had my name as \'bacula2-fd\' in that file but that didn\'t work either. And on the site I read on how to install Windows Bacula it said that the whole monitor section needed to be commented out, that\'s why that is the way it is.
Another problem--which may not be for here is about the Windows piece-- When ever I try to start bconsole a Command prompt window opens and immediately closes a split second later. I can\'t even read what\'s on the screen. This is a CentOS forum so that may be for another place but just in case here\'s my bconsole.conf file from my windows machine.
#

Director {
Name = bacula-dir
DIRport = 9101
address = 192.168.1.195
Password = pw
}
My password is not I replaced the actual password with that, I am 100% sure they all match but my question is--the quotes. Do those matter when entering the password? From all the documentation I can\'t tell if its put there because password is just an example, I also see documentation without quotes. Does it not matter as long as it\'s consistent?

    3) The above step 2 should invite you to do the following \'su -c \'rpm -Uvh http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release-5-2.noarch.rpm\'\'
I did all of this while bacula\'s 3 services were stopped, if i didn\'t stop them they would complain about some authentication errors on next restart.
Then again most \'real\' linux users prefer to use little to NO gui\'s.
If you want to change the settings on your windows box after you have installed bacula windows client, all you need to do is go to start, programs, then bacula something or other, should have links to the config files. if not search with windows for bacula, *.conf or something or other. don\'t forget to restart the bacula service on windows once you are done with changes, or just restart windows :(
    I am not a linux user, i am just a average windows web / software developer that is motivated to get this working, so please don\'t expect me to no all the answers if you ask questions.

I\'ve almost never heard of a case where the system state of a windows machine needs to be recovered.
    Rory :-)Hey guys,
    I\'m a total beginner when it comes to Linux and Bacula.

#
    # Bacula User Agent (or Console) Configuration File
    #
    Director {
    Name = bacula-dir
    DIRport = 9101
    address = 192.168.1.195
    Password = pw
    }
My password is not I replaced the actual password with that, I am 100% sure they all match but my question is--the quotes. Do those matter when entering the password? From all the documentation I can\'t tell if its put there because password is just an example, I also see documentation without quotes. Does it not matter as long as it\'s consistent?
    Sorry if these are dumb question, any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
    Thanks :-D ,
