Question I will be building some bookcases with shelves as long as 46'. They will be about 10' deep. These will be part of a painted installation. What material have you used for shelves that wide, without sagging?

  • 1 Building Materials: Granite and Lumber for Cabinets
  • 2 Maximum Overhang for a Laminate Countertop
  • 3 Uses for Particleboard
  • 4 Glue a Formica Counter Top

Particleboard is used extensively in cabinets and new home construction. It is used for floor underlay and all kinds of special products that are painted, such as profiled or routed cabinet doors and laminated pew ends. It is strong enough for most applications but lacks the strength of plywood or solid wood because there is no grain structure to it. Beef it up with a few simple tricks.

Laminating

Adding laminate will drastically improve the strength of particleboard or chipboard. That is one reason why it is popular for countertops. The other reason is that it is consistently flat and readily adapts to glue. When laminate is applied to the top of particleboard with contact cement, it becomes almost indestructible. The laminate prevents cracks or splits and protects against moisture penetration. Once the laminate is adhered to the particleboard surface, it is easily trimmed flush to the edges with a router or rotary tool and a laminate-trimming bit.

Sealing

Sealing with a good quality sanding sealer or even plain lacquer will strengthen particleboard. They prevent moisture penetration on all sides, including the edges. In time, the particles will separate as the glue loses adhesion. If the particleboard is fully protected against moisture, it remains stable indefinitely, retaining the full strength it had when manufactured.

Bracing

Bracing is another way to physically strengthen particleboard. If you have access to the backside of particleboard, whether it's the bottom of a shelf or the back of an interior cabinet jamb, you can glue and screw some small strips of plywood to it. This bracing system will add much more strength to the particleboard and act as a fortification to support more weight than the particleboard would typically be rated for.

Doubling

Most cabinetmakers use particleboard on countertops. Particularly they like it for cantilevered countertops where stools slide underneath. Most often they will simply double the particleboard. By gluing two pieces together, you give the particleboard twice the strength. This thickens the particleboard enough so that when cut into an outside radius, the outside edge can have plastic laminated directly to it without adding fascia.

Particle board -- a composite material made of wood chips, shavings and sawdust that are packed together and extruded -- is cheaper to use than hardwood. Many builders use it when cost is more important than appearance. This type of material is easily damaged but repairs can be made quickly with wood filler and a sanding block. You will have to do some prep work before you apply the filler, but concealing the repair is easily done with a coat of paint.

  1. Remove loose chips or rotted wood from the damaged area with a stiff-bristled brush. Sand and smooth rough edges with a medium-grit sanding block. Use a vacuum to remove dust, dirt and small pieces of particle board. Wood filler will not adhere to dirt.

  2. Fill the damaged area with wood filler using a putty knife. Because wood filler shrinks as it dries, apply enough filler to shape a mound slightly higher than the surface to allow for easier sanding. Allow the filler to dry completely.

  3. Sand the patched area with a medium-grit sanding block. Remove the sanding dust with a vacuum. Apply a second layer of wood filler and allow it to dry completely.

  4. Sand and smooth the wood filler with a fine-grit sanding block. Feather the edges of the filler into the surface of the wood. Remove the sanding dust with a vacuum.

  5. Apply a third coat of wood filler if needed, depending on the size of the damaged area. Allow the filler to dry, and sand it smooth with the fine-grit sanding block.

  6. Prime the particle board if you are painting it. Use a paintbrush, small roller or spray can to apply the primer and allow it to dry completely before you apply paint.

    Tip

Use an electric sander equipped with a dust bag to sand large areas.

Wood hardener can be applied to damp or rotted wood to strengthen it before you do the repair.

Do not apply primer to the repair, and use wood filler that can be stained, if you are staining the particle board rather than painting.

Auto body fillers can also be used as wood fillers because of their strength and durability.

    Warning

Refer to the manufacturer's mixing instructions when you use two-part epoxy fillers. There are many brands of epoxy filler and the instructions vary depending on the manufacturer.

Wear a dust mask and eye protection when sanding.
